Spider-Man lives up to the hype

September 18, 2018 By Southpoint Tuggeranong

Marvel and Insomniac Games have teamed up to create a brand-new and authentic Spider-Man story. This isn’t the Spider-Man you’ve met before, or seen in a movie. This is an experienced Peter Parker who’s more masterful at fighting big crime in New York City. At the same time he’s struggling to balance his chaotic personal life and career while the fate of nine million New Yorkers rests upon his shoulders. – via PlayStation

There’s a reason Marvel’s Spider-Man is the fastest selling game in a number of locations around the world. Sony has released what is already considered as the greatest superhero game of all time. But bad luck to those of Xbox-land, as this game is exclusively released on the PlayStation 4. The game is likened to Assassins Creed (but in the modern day environment of NYC). Players are able to swing seamlessly from building to building, feeling completely in control with the intuitive responses the game offers.    The open world environment is not taken lightly, with Insomniac packing in hours of items to complete away from the main story. Some of these side-missions include discovering Parker’s lost backpacks around Manhattan. It is worth nothing though that these locations sometimes won’t appear on your map until you de-scramble the surveillance towers throughout the world.

The graphics in Spider-Man are visually striking, different times of the day are depicted with incredible detail. The graphics are so impressive due to the lighting model implemented in the games design. The level of detail not just limited to the environment, it also expands to the characters. SpiderMan’s suit is complete with stunning texture work, with the tiniest of details being visible throughout.

The game does not rely just on a stunning graphics model though, the story is an equal match. The story skips the standard origin plot, it instead skips to a Peter Parker / SpiderMan whose been keeping New York City safe for years. The game runs with the duality of SpiderMan and Peter Parker, which keeps it interesting and offers a change of pace between two contrasting worlds. The quality of characters and equal attention to details between the two worlds is what keeps players engrossed.

There have been many games created off the back of successful superhero franchises. However few come close to this title by Insomniac. With intuitive yet simple to use controls, a holistic story, and an excess of side-missions to keep players entertained, this game lives up to all of the hype it has received. 9/10

Marvel SpiderMan is available from South.Point retailers JBHIFI, EB Games, BIG W, Target and Kmart.
