Grace Alicia Gee – Age 16

What is your talent, and what or who inspired you to start performing as a musician?

Growing up, there would always be music playing in the car, I would listen to my parents' albums and try to remember every lyric. My Nan was, and still is, part of a ladies choir which I admired as a child. She definitely helped me find my path to music and was a huge influence in my childhood. I was also lead to music through its ability to allow me to escape. Music has and will always be there for me in the worst and best times and I found that its ability to tell stories and portray emotions began to fascinate me, so I decided to learn the piano when I was I now not only listen to others' music but use my ability to sing and play to tell my own stories.

Where do you hope to see yourself as a performer in five years’ time?

In 5 years, I hope to continue working both independently and collaborating with other musicians. It has always been a dream of mine to be performing at live venues, working on my performance ability and showmanship. In 5 years, I wish to continue writing my own songs and developing my skill set as a songwriter. I wish to gain a maturity to write with as well as more stories to tell through my music. I want to be singing my original work and performing it to a wider audience.

Why should people come and watch your performance at the Rising Star Competition on Saturday?

I bring something special to my performances. I believe music is a wonderful way to express emotion and passion for music. I love nothing more than seeing the smiles of other people and I hope for my performance can do this. Music gives me a satisfaction which I can get from nothing else. I hope to connect with the audience and I believe people should come and watch my performance to connect with me and feel that same feeling. I want the audience to be able to appreciate music as much as I do.

The performance of music is such a powerful tool for bringing a range of different people together and creating a positive experience. Samantha Marceddo - Age 24

What is your talent, and what or who inspired you to start performing as a musician/dancer?

I am a singer. I think I was actually born to sing, I never stop. I first started lessons when I was about 7 because my school teacher noticed that all I did all day was sing. I didn’t realise I was doing it and it would annoy my classmates because I just never shut up. I am very grateful that my teacher approached my parents and told them to put me into lessons, they did straight away and I have been doing them ever since.   I also feel very sorry for my neighbours, because no doubt they get serenaded daily by me.   There’s just something about singing that opens me up and I am slowing learning to embrace that aspect of myself. Singing was always something I kept quite private and have only very recently been inspired by all the people in the Canberra musical theatre scene to pursue performing as a passion. I am performing later this year as Oz in the Arena Spectacular of We Will Rock You which will be my first major role.

Where do you hope to see yourself as a performer in five years’ time?

If I could quit my day job to sing full time, I would do so in a heartbeat, unfortunately that’s not always how it works in the real world. In 5 years time I would hope to be a more confident performer, with an attitude to go after things I want in this industry. I accept that there is still a lot for me to learn, but I am a quick learner and if I keep improving, who knows were I could be in 5 years. I have an eye to potentially go to theatre school and study musical theatre.

Why should people come and watch your performance at the Rising Star Competition on Saturday?

I think it is wonderful to acknowledge and celebrate local talent. Canberra is full of very talented people looking for the opportunity to showcase what they’ve got. These skills do not appear overnight and are the result of hard work and determination. Musician and dancer spends years perfecting their skills and are always learning new tricks. I am one person amongst a plethora of talented people and I think Canberra should come and see what we’ve got. Who knows, they might be coming to see a future star, or they might just have the pleasure of seeing a good show.

I performed publicly for the first time 18 months ago and I haven't looked back.

Where do you hope to see yourself as a performer in five years’ time?

Hopefully I have won a Golden Guitar! However, if that is reaching a bit far you will be able to find me playing on the big stage at Tamworth, in the Toyota Star Maker Competition.
